Tips For Buying a Used Boat

Boat shopping is a lot of fun and overwhelming at the same time! When looking for a used boat there are a few things to keep in mind that will ensure you are happy with your purchase.

Look For Cracks

There is no need to worry too much about small cracks that you may find. These smaller cracks are typically located near screws, handles, and windshields. What you do want to look for is cracks that are 2 inches or more in length. If you find any of these larger cracks it is always a good idea to ask questions and also get an expert involved.

Traces of Mildew

Check to see if the seats, boat top, storage lockers, or carpet have any signs of mildew. Most mildew can be cleaned up with the right technique, but extensive mold in the seats is never a good sign.

Make Sure Electronics Work

Burned out bulbs are one thing you do not need to worry about as they are easily replaced. What you really want to check for is if the engine labels have peeled up and if the insulation on wires have melted or show major signs of wear. These things could bring up trouble in the long run.

Check the Oil & Belts

The alternator and power-steering belts should not be thin, worn, or cracked. When it comes to the oil, make sure it does not feel gritty between your fingers. If it feels this way it is a sign of major engine wear.

Check the Engine

When you start up the engine, pay attention to see if it has a rough start or seems to slip, if it smokes, vibrates, or makes a lot of noise there could be something wrong. A problem in the engine can get very pricey very quickly.
