Preparing for Boating Season Checklist

Preparing for boating season can be an overwhelming task. Being prepared ensures that boating season goes as smoothly and as safely as possible so we can focus on having fun with our family and friends. Here are a few ways to help you prepare so you can get out on the water as soon as the weather allows.

Register Your Boat

Registering your boat is one of the most important tasks you need to do when preparing for boating season. Boat registration will help keep boating safe and fun for everyone out on the water. The fee that you pay goes towards the state's waters, and also proves that you are the owner to your boat. Each state has different guidelines when it comes to the requirements - so make sure you know these. Depending on the type of boat you have, you may need to display your registration number and validation sticker.

Boat Maintenance

There are several things you should inspect before taking your boat out on the water for the first time after the winter months. Follow this checklist when preparing for boating season to ensure your boat runs smoothly.

  • Empty and refill your fuel tank

  • Recharge your battery and fill the cells with distilled water

  • Replace the oil filter and lubricate all parts

  • Check all electrical systems

  • Inspect the propeller

  • Check that the hull is free of cracks

  • Flush the water tank

  • Check and change all fluid levels

Consider Safety

It is always important to learn what to do in an emergency before it happens. Go through a safety checklist like this to make sure you are prepared:

  • Fire extinguishers that everyone knows how to use are up to date. Store one in the hem or cockpit.

  • Check all personal flotation devices to make sure they are free of wear, abrasions, or weak seams.

  • The fuel system is clean, secure, and leak-free.

  • Electrical system is clean and secure. Protect the system with things like circuit breakers and fuses.

  • All parts of your boat are free of corrosion and lubricated or painted to prevent it.

Once you go over your checklist, you're ready for the season on the water!
